Well…Mr. T-BIRD himself actually gives us a great recap of THE BREAKS over on their home page. So we’ll just simply let him tell ya how the BREAKS are breakin’ it down. But in a nutshell, T-BIRD and the BREAKS are defining a particular brand of music called “chunk” music – which, according to the artist(s) is “a form of twenty-first century American music consisting of equal parts funk, hip-hop, and rock and roll characterized by its rough sonic quality and energetic, visceral performance. Commonly served hot with a side of girls and brass.”
T-BIRD’s latest album entitled ‘Never Get Out Of This Funk Alive’ was just released earlier this summer. And it’s chock-full of funked-up, soul-ed out, hip rock songs.
“Chunk” music just might fit this band straight to a tee. And we can absolutely hear the amalgamation of influences likely ranging from James Brown and Funkadelic to Galactic and the North Mississippi All-Stars – and everywhere in between.
This band is rather unique, indeed. And T-BIRD has grown the BREAKS into a motley stew of various musicians, singers, and artists – in a relatively rather short amount of time.
And this is perhaps what strikes me the most about this band. Not only are they making chilly-willy funked-up jam music for the modern era – they’re clearly having fun at the same time.
And while I admittedly don’t always reach first for this particular brand of funk and roll all of the time, I’ve got no problem gettin’ a little funked-up every now and again, either. It’s pretty hard not to dig those horns (and those sultry lovely ladies).
This stuff is just fun to listen to. Kinda takes me back to my youth a little bit – during the middle of those hot summer days hangin’ on the beach somewhere. And it gives us crazy headbanger types a nice little break in the action from time to time (no pun intended).
Check out T-BIRD and the BREAKS. They’ve got a pretty interesting (and entertaining) story. And they’ll be performing this Saturday at 2:05 PM on the Blue stage at the Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin. Keep the chunk alive y’all!
